The Battle of Midway: The Zero Killer

World War II was a worldwide military conflict from 1939 to 1945 that split the world's majority into two distinct groups: the Allies and the Axis.  The massive conflict resulted in the mobilization of more than 100 million military personnel around the globe, and a stunning 60 million deaths.

Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan were the three major Axis powers, heavy-handed and dominant forces that spanned Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific Ocean.   The WWII Allies included the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom, collectively referred to as "The Big Three.".

World War II ended with an Allied victory and the emergence of the world's two leading superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union.  But victory came at a devastating cost to all.

The ground fighting is an ongoing, widespread battle for territory.  Waves of soldiers are slaughtered in towns and villages across countries.  But the blood spilled isn't contained within the boundaries of land.  High above the ground, the bloodshed is duplicated in aerial battles that know no end.

As vicious air wars punctuate the clear blue skies, the American fighter plane, the F4F Wildcat, falls prey to the speed and stealth of the Japanese Zero.  Like seasoned predators, Japanese pilots know to loop around the Americans and the Wildcats will take chase.  The Japanese know too that the US warplane is prone to stalling during such maneuvers, and the Zero can then move in for an easy kill.

With every American top gun shot down, the Zero earns a more fearsome reputation.  The US knows, without a swift countermeasure, the Japanese will command the skies altogether and the war on the ground will be hopelessly lost.  At home, the American military scrambles for the answer.  Enter the F6F Hellcat.  And with that, the Zero has finally met its match.
